Google's user-generated spam guide now tells platforms to keep link-shared pages out of Search by default
Google updated its guide on preventing user-generated spam on 26th Oct. The Search Central changelog logs it the same day as "Updated guidance on preventing user-generated spam".
The changelog's "What" line names "guidance on blocking indexing of link-shared content and monitoring abuse in Search Console". Its "Why" line: "To help platforms keep user-created pages that aren't meant for Search out of the index and detect spam earlier."
We compared the live page with an archived copy from 15th Oct, stamped 10th Dec 2025. Three passages changed.
The intro now covers "tools that let users publish shared pages, generated content, or web apps". It used to name hosting platforms alone, and "sites" became "pages or sites".
The second change is a new section, "Only index content meant for Search". It asks services whose users "create shareable pages, generated outputs, or interactive tools" whether that content "is meant to be found through search engines or only accessed directly by people with a link".
The advice follows. When pages exist "for direct sharing, collaboration, or utility rather than public search discovery", apply noindex "or block crawling in robots.txt by default".
The third change adds two items to the abuse-monitoring list. The first says to verify the site or subdomain in Search Console for manual-action and security alerts.
It also says to check the Page Indexing and Search performance reports "for unexpected spikes in indexed pages, impressions, or queries that don't match your platform's purpose".
The second new item asks platforms to track their own creation and indexing metrics. The alerts it names are "spikes in newly published public pages or a small number of users generating a large share of indexable URLs".
The older advice to noindex posts from new users until they gain reputation is unchanged. So is the rest of the page.
The page names no product, company or AI tool. It is a guide revision, not a spam-policy change: the spam policies page is still stamped 28th Aug.
Search Engine Roundtable, Search Engine Journal and PPC Land reported it on 26th Oct.
Search Engine Journal adds a caveat from Google's noindex page. The rule only works when robots.txt is not blocking the page.
The changelog's RSS feed still lacked the item on the morning of 27th Oct. The HTML page had it.
