Google announced the December 2024 core update on 12th Dec. It marked the update complete on the Search Status Dashboard on 18th Dec 2024, after 6 days and 4 hours.
It was the fourth and final core update of 2024 and by far the year's fastest rollout. The March core update had taken 45 days, the August one 19 days and the November one 23 days.
The timing was the story.
The update began exactly one week after the November 2024 core update finished on 5th Dec. Google acknowledged the unusual back-to-back scheduling, explaining that "we have different core systems we're always improving."
Search Engine Land reported that despite the short window, third-party rank trackers recorded ranking swings comparable to much larger updates.
The December 2024 spam update followed one day after this rollout ended.
If your site moved in the 12th to 18th Dec window, Google's standing guidance for core updates applies. Audit the pages that lost rankings against the self-assessment questions in the core updates help pages.
Invest in overall helpfulness. Meaningful recovery typically shows up at a future core update.
