Google announced the December 2024 core update on December 12 and marked it complete on the Search Status Dashboard on December 18, 2024, after just 6 days and 4 hours. It was the fourth and final core update of 2024 and by far the year's fastest rollout: the March core update had taken 45 days, August 19 days and November 23 days.
The timing was the story. The update began exactly one week after the November 2024 core update finished on December 5, and Google acknowledged the unusual back-to-back scheduling, explaining that "we have different core systems we're always improving." Search Engine Land reported that despite the short window, third-party rank trackers recorded volatility spikes comparable to much larger updates, and the December 2024 spam update followed one day after this rollout ended.
If your site moved in the December 12-18 window, Google's standing guidance for core updates applies: audit the pages that lost visibility against the self-assessment questions in the core updates documentation and invest in overall helpfulness; meaningful recovery typically registers at a future core update. Our recovery guide covers the sequence.
