Google's definition: Discover "is a part of Google Search that shows people content related to their interests, based on their Web and App Activity". Nobody types a query; Google serves the feed on its own.

It lives on the Google app's home screen, on mobile google.com and in the Pixel swipe-right panel. It also fills Chrome's new tab page on Android and iOS, and desktop remains in limited testing.

Why it matters. Chartbeat measured 68% of Google traffic to its network of almost 2,000 news sites arriving via Discover in August 2025.

Google itself calls Discover traffic "less predictable or dependable" than search.

How pages become eligible

Nothing to send in, no tag to add, and no promise of a place.

Google's page is plain: "Content is automatically eligible to appear in Discover if it is indexed by Google and meets Discover's content policies. No special tags or structured data are required."

The ceiling is just as plain. "Being eligible to appear in Discover is not a guarantee of appearing."

Discover's content policies add rules of their own. Ads should not exceed the content on the page.

Preview text must not promise what the page does not deliver. Pages also need clear dates, bylines and contact details.

Violations can remove content from the feed. Discover manual actions appear in Search Console.

How Discover ranks

The same systems as Search, which is why core updates move Discover traffic.

Google says Discover "makes use of many of the same signals and systems used by Search to determine what is helpful, people-first content". So a core update can move Discover traffic without touching your site.

Google names three reasons traffic moves on its own. They are shifting user interests, changes to what content types the feed favours, and Search updates.

In February 2026 Google ran its first update named for Discover. The February 2026 Discover core update assessed expertise "on a topic-by-topic basis" and applied to US English only.

A fit-for-feed filter sits on top. Discover may skip job forms, petitions, code repos or satire without context, and it applies SafeSearch.

How to appear in Google Discover

Google's actual guidance is short: be indexed, follow the policies, use big images, write honest titles, show topic expertise.

Images are the one technical lever Google names. Use large, high-quality images at least 1,200 pixels wide, in 16 by 9, enabled through the max-image-preview:large setting.

Avoid logos and text-heavy images.

Titles are policed, not optimized. Google's guidance warns against withholding essential information and against "morbid curiosity, titillation, or outrage".

On content, Google favours timely, story-driven pages with unique insight, from sources with shown topic expertise. Older evergreen pages can surface when they match someone's interests.

Measure it in Search Console's Discover performance report, which holds 16 months of data. Since 31st Aug 2026 every property also has a Generative AI report for Discover.

That report shows impressions inside the feed's AI features.
