Sentence Shortener

Tighten long sentences and wordy paragraphs without losing meaning, with the cuts highlighted.

How it works

The Sentence Shortener runs your text through a large language model pinned to a single job: make it shorter without losing meaning. It cuts filler, collapses roundabout phrasing, and prefers active constructions. You get an editable result, a changed-words highlight, before/after word counts, and readability scores.

Free visitors shorten up to 1,500 characters per submission; paid plans up to 12,000. For other rewriting jobs (tone, formality, expansion) use the Paraphrasing Tool, the same engine with all eight modes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I shorten a sentence with this tool?

Paste the sentence (or a whole wordy paragraph) and click Shorten. The tool removes redundancy, filler phrases, and roundabout constructions while keeping your meaning, and highlights exactly which words changed.

What makes a sentence too long?

Not length itself but load: stacked clauses, hedge words ("in order to", "it should be noted that"), doubled-up modifiers, and passive constructions. Readability research suggests readers start losing the thread past roughly 25 words, our Sentence Counter flags those, and this tool fixes them.

Will shortening lose my meaning?

The instruction is to cut redundancy, not substance: key facts, names, and qualifiers should survive. The result stays editable and the changed-words highlight makes it easy to check nothing important vanished. If a legally-required phrase must stay, list it under Keep these words.

How much shorter will my text get?

Typically 20-40% fewer words on wordy input; already-tight text shrinks less because there is less to cut, which is the honest behavior you want. The words and characters counts on the result card show the exact before and after.

Can I shorten a whole paragraph or email?

Yes. Anything up to your plan's character limit works (1,500 characters free, up to 12,000 on paid plans), and paragraph breaks are preserved. For trimming a whole article section by section, the Article Rewriter's Shorten mode is the same engine.

Is it free?

Yes, no signup. Each shortening uses part of a shared daily AI allowance, shown live by the quota chip on the page.
