Enter a post's likes, comments, saves, and shares plus your follower count to get its Instagram engagement rate and see how it compares with accounts your size. Advanced options add the by-reach and by-Reel-views rates.
How it works
Engagement rate is the share of your audience that interacted with a post. On Instagram the interactions that count are likes, comments, saves, and shares; saves and shares are the ones the feed rewards most, so include them from the post's Insights whenever you can.
Formulas. ER by followers = (Likes + Comments + Saves + Shares) / Followers x 100. ER by reach = Interactions / Accounts reached x 100. ER by views (Reels) = Interactions / Reel views x 100.
The verdict line compares your by-followers rate with the range that is typical for accounts of your size. That is roughly 2% to 5% under 10k followers, 1% to 3% from 10k to 100k, 0.7% to 1.5% from 100k to 1M, and 0.4% to 1% above 1M. These are approximate ranges drawn from public industry studies, not Instagram data, and rates fall as accounts grow, which is why the comparison is by size.
Advanced options add accounts reached and Reel views, for the by-reach and by-views engagement rates.

What you will see
- Engagement rate (by followers)
- Interactions divided by your follower count. The classic, comparable-across-accounts number brands quote.
- Versus accounts your size
- Whether that rate sits above, within, or below the typical range for your follower tier.
- Total interactions
- Likes + comments + saves + shares for the post.
- Interactions per 1,000 followers
- The same signal as a count, handy when comparing posts over time.
- Engagement rate (by reach)
- Interactions divided by accounts reached, from Insights. Fairer when the algorithm limited distribution.
- Engagement rate (by Reel views)
- Interactions divided by Reel views, the usual way Reels are compared.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good Instagram engagement rate?
It depends on account size, because rates fall as audiences grow. Typical by-followers ranges are roughly 2-5% for accounts under 10k followers, 1-3% from 10k to 100k, 0.7-1.5% from 100k to 1M, and 0.4-1% above 1M; anything above the range for your size is strong. These are approximate ranges from public industry studies, so judge against accounts your size in your niche rather than a single universal number.
Which interactions count on Instagram?
Likes and comments always, plus saves and shares, which Instagram surfaces in the post's Insights and weighs heavily when deciding who else sees the post. Enter all four when you have them. Profile visits and link taps are useful but are not usually part of the engagement rate.
Should I calculate engagement by followers, by reach, or by views?
By followers is the comparable public number. By reach (Advanced options) answers "did the people who actually saw it care?" and is fairer when the feed showed the post to a small share of followers. For Reels, by views is the standard comparison because most Reel views come from non-followers.
Where do I find reach, saves, and Reel views?
Open the post or Reel in the Instagram app and tap "View insights" (a professional account is needed). Accounts reached, saves, shares, and, for Reels, views are all listed there. Likes and comments are visible on the post itself.
How do I calculate engagement rate for my whole account?
Average the interactions of your last 10 to 12 posts and enter that average as the likes / comments / saves / shares, with your current follower count. Brands vetting creators usually look at this averaged rate rather than a single best post.
Why did my engagement rate drop as my account grew?
Almost every account's rate falls as followers rise: a larger audience is less tightly matched to your content, and the feed shows each post to a smaller share of it. That is why the verdict compares you with accounts of your own size instead of a universal number.
Does this tool connect to my Instagram account?
No. Nothing connects to Instagram and no handle is looked up; you type the numbers from your post or from Insights and the maths runs in your browser. Instagram does not allow tools to read account data without login, so this is the reliable way to get an exact rate.
Is the Instagram engagement rate calculator free?
Yes, free with no signup, running entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded; your last entries are remembered locally so the calculator is ready next time.
