How it works

The Google Keyword Tool harvests real-time autocomplete suggestions from Google's public suggest API (the same API that powers the dropdown in google.com's search box) for any seed term you enter. Suggestions reflect what real users actually search for. We then enrich every harvested keyword with monthly volume, CPC, competition, and a 12-month trend via the Keywords Everywhere API.

How the harvest works. The harvester runs in your browser via JSONP (calls go from your IP, not ours) and iterates your seed term combined with the alphabet (a-z, 0-9) plus ~70 modifier words spanning questions, comparisons, prepositions, buyer-intent qualifiers, product-info, tutorials, and customizations. For each prefix Google returns 0-10 suggestions; we collect every unique one. A typical 5-seed harvest produces 200-500+ keywords.

Volume enrichment. As keywords are harvested, batches of 100 are sent to the KE API for volume + CPC + competition + 12-month trend lookup. Results stream back into the table as they arrive, no need to wait for the whole harvest to finish.

Country targeting. The Country dropdown selects both the suggest API's geo hint (so suggestions reflect that market's real searches) and the volume-data lookup country. Your last-picked country persists across sessions.

Conservative pacing. The harvest is paced at roughly one request every 1.5 seconds (~0.6 req/sec sustained) to stay below Google's per-IP rate limit. A full 5-seed harvest takes ~15 minutes. You can stop early at any time and keep the keywords found so far.

Plan caps. On the Free plan you can run 500 keyword lookups per day across all our keyword tools combined.

What the columns mean
Keyword
The exact suggestion Google's autosuggest returned for some prefix of your seed term. Click the cross-link icon to open the keyword in SERP Checker for a live SERP audit.
Volume
Monthly search volume averaged over the past 12 months, sourced from Google Keyword Planner via the Keywords Everywhere API. A zero-volume row may be a newer suggestion Google hasn't accumulated data on yet, or a very low-volume long-tail.
CPC
Average cost-per-click that advertisers pay in Google Ads for that keyword, in the country's currency. Higher CPCs typically indicate commercial-intent keywords where competition for ads is fierce.
Competition
Google Ads' competition score (Low / Medium / High), reflecting how many advertisers bid on the keyword. Loose proxy for SEO difficulty: high ad competition usually correlates with high organic competition.
12-Month Trend
Sparkline of monthly search volume over the past year. Useful for spotting seasonal patterns or rising/declining interest. Hover any point on the chart for the exact month-over-month value.
Frequently asked questions

What is the Google Keyword Tool?

It's a free, no-signup keyword-research tool that harvests real-time autocomplete suggestions from Google's public suggest API for any seed term you enter, then enriches every harvested keyword with monthly search volume, cost-per-click (CPC), competition score, and a 12-month trend sparkline. The harvester runs entirely in your browser (calls come from your IP, not ours), and the volume data comes from the Keywords Everywhere API.

How does Google's autosuggest keyword research work?

Google's suggest API powers the autocomplete dropdown in google.com's search box. Every prefix you type returns a list of suggestions that real users have searched for. We programmatically iterate through your seed term combined with the alphabet (a-z, 0-9) and ~70 modifier words (questions, comparisons, prepositions, buyer-intent qualifiers, etc.), collecting every unique suggestion Google returns. The result is hundreds of long-tail keywords that real searchers use, far more than typing into the box manually would surface.

Is this a free Google Keyword Planner alternative?

Yes, with two differences worth knowing. Google Keyword Planner requires a Google Ads account (and increasingly hides exact-volume data unless you're actively running ad campaigns). This tool is free, requires no signup, and shows exact monthly volumes via the Keywords Everywhere API. The trade-off: Keyword Planner has access to Google's own click and ad-impression data we can't reproduce, so it surfaces some commercial keywords that don't appear in autosuggest. For most content-marketing and SEO use cases, this tool produces more long-tail variations; for paid-ad keyword targeting, Keyword Planner has data this tool doesn't.

How do I find low-competition keywords?

After running a harvest, click the Competition column header to sort ascending. Low-competition rows (green badges) are easier to rank for and often have less ad spend chasing them, which makes them attractive for SEO. Pair "Low competition" with a meaningful Volume number (say 100+/month) and a relevant Trend (flat or growing, not declining) and you've got a solid starter list. Avoid chasing high-volume + high-competition terms unless you have strong existing authority.

Why does the harvest take a few minutes?

To be a good citizen of Google's suggest API, we space requests out conservatively (one every ~1.5 seconds). A typical 5-seed harvest makes ~530 individual calls (5 seeds × 106 modifiers), which takes ~15 minutes total at our default cadence. The slow pace is deliberate, hammering the suggest API would get your IP blocked quickly. While the harvest runs you can leave the tab open and check back; results stream in as they're found.

Does this tool work for keyword research in other countries?

Yes. Use the Country dropdown above the seed input to pick a target market. The suggest API takes a regional hint (gl=us, gl=in, etc.) so suggestions reflect that country's real-search patterns, and the volume + CPC enrichment is pulled with that country's data. Currently we support Global plus 7 KE-supported countries (US, UK, CA, AU, IN, NZ, ZA). Your last-picked country persists across sessions.

How accurate is the keyword volume data?

Volume comes from Google's Keyword Planner via the Keywords Everywhere API, the same source most professional SEO tools use. Numbers are monthly averages over the past 12 months, so a keyword with strong seasonality (e.g. "halloween costumes") shows its average rather than the seasonal peak. CPC and competition are derived from Google Ads bidding data. For high-volume keywords (1k+/month) the data is very reliable; for low-volume long-tail (under 100/month), expect some noise.

Can I export the harvested keywords?

Yes. After a harvest completes, the results table includes a CSV / Excel export button in the header. The export includes every harvested keyword along with its volume, CPC, competition score, and trend data (12 monthly values), suitable for importing into a spreadsheet or further analysis. The export honors your current sort and filter state.
