How it works

Sentences are counted live as you type, splitting on sentence-ending punctuation. Below the stats, every sentence is listed with its word count, and anything over 25 words is flagged so long, hard-to-read sentences stand out immediately.

Everything runs locally. Your text is never uploaded, and there is no signup.

Frequently asked questions

How does the sentence counter work?

Type or paste your text and the count updates live. A sentence ends at a period, exclamation mark, question mark, or ellipsis followed by a space or the end of the text, so abbreviations mid-sentence rarely split incorrectly. A block of text with no terminator still counts as one sentence.

Why does it list every sentence?

The breakdown shows each sentence with its word count, so you can spot the overlong ones at a glance instead of hunting for them. Sentences over 25 words are flagged, a common readability guide, long sentences are where readers get lost.

Is 25 words a hard limit for a sentence?

No, it is a guide, not a rule. Plenty of great sentences run longer. But when many sentences pass 25 words, average readers start re-reading, so the flag is a nudge to check whether a long one could split in two.

What is a good average sentence length?

For web writing, an average of 15-20 words per sentence reads comfortably. Academic writing runs longer, and marketing copy often shorter. The "Avg words / sentence" tile gives you that number live.

How are sentences counted in bullet lists?

List items without ending punctuation are not split apart, so several bullets may count as one "sentence" until you add terminators. For strict line-by-line counting (like lyrics), our Syllable Counter's per-line view may fit better.

Does it also count words and paragraphs?

Yes, words, characters, paragraphs, and estimated reading time all show alongside the sentence count, so this doubles as a quick word counter.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser with no signup; your latest text is remembered only in your own browser.
