What are the rules for a Pinterest username?
Three to 30 characters, letters and numbers only. Unlike most platforms, Pinterest allows no underscores, periods, spaces, or other symbols, so "tiny_kitchen" is rejected and "tinykitchen" is not. The username is the part of your profile URL (pinterest.com/username); your profile name is a separate field that can be up to 65 characters with spaces.
How does the availability check work?

Taken means a public account exists, with a link to open it; Looks free means none was found right now. The lookup runs from your own browser, not our server, and nothing is stored. It is not a reservation: Pinterest can still refuse a name that was recently closed or is reserved, so confirm when you sign up.
Username or profile name: which one matters for search?
Both are searchable, but the profile name carries the weight because it can hold your topic in plain words ("Maya | Small Kitchen Ideas"). Keep the username short and easy to say, and put the keyword people search into the profile name and bio. Can I change my Pinterest username later?
