How it works
Markup is profit expressed as a percentage of COST: a $50 cost with a 50% markup sells for $75. It is not the same as margin, which expresses the same profit as a percentage of the PRICE; that $75 sale has a 33.3% margin. This calculator shows both so the two never get confused.
Formulas: Price = Cost x (1 + Markup / 100); Margin = Profit / Price x 100.

What is the difference between markup and margin?
Both describe the same profit, from different angles. Markup divides profit by COST; margin divides it by PRICE. A 50% markup is a 33.3% margin; a 100% markup is a 50% margin. Quoting one when you mean the other is one of the most expensive spreadsheet mistakes in retail.
How do I calculate a selling price from cost and markup?
Multiply the cost by (1 + markup as a decimal). A $40 cost at 60% markup: $40 x 1.6 = $64. Enter cost and markup above and the price, profit, and equivalent margin appear instantly.
How do I find the markup from a price I already charge?
Turn on Advanced options and enter the selling price; the calculator works the markup out for you: (Price - Cost) / Cost x 100. A $50 cost sold at $80 is a 60% markup (and a 37.5% margin).
What is a typical markup?
It varies wildly by industry: groceries often run 10-30%, apparel 100-300% (keystone pricing is exactly 100%), restaurants 200-400% on food. The right markup covers your costs of doing business, not just the item cost.
