Instagram serves images at up to 1080 pixels wide and re-compresses every upload, so 1080 wide at JPG quality 85 to 95 is the sweet spot. Reels and Stories are video-first, but a still frame or cover at 1080 x 1920 uses the same canvas.
How it works
Pick the Instagram size you are posting to, drop in one or more photos, and each is resized to that exact size in your browser. Crop to fill (the default) scales the photo to cover the frame and trims the overflow, with a Crop focus menu to keep the top, bottom, left, or right; Fit with padding keeps the whole photo and pads the rest in a colour of your choice; Stretch forces the size without cropping or padding. Custom size accepts any width and height.
Output defaults to JPG at 90% quality, which is what Instagram re-compresses to anyway; PNG and WebP are there for graphics and transparency. Each result shows the original and new dimensions and file size, and downloads with the preset and size in the filename.
Everything runs locally. Your photos are never uploaded, there is no signup, and re-encoding strips EXIF metadata. Animated GIFs export as a single still frame.

What size should an Instagram post be?
1080 pixels wide. Square posts are 1080 x 1080 (1:1), portrait posts 1080 x 1350 (4:5), and landscape posts 1080 x 566 (1.91:1). Portrait takes up the most screen in the feed and matches the profile grid, which is why most creators default to 4:5. Pick the preset, drop your photos in, and download.
What size are Instagram Stories and Reels?
1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16) for both. Stories and Reels are full screen, so anything in the top and bottom 250 pixels or so can sit under the interface (the profile bar, caption, audio, and action buttons); keep faces and text in the middle. What size is an Instagram profile picture?
Upload a square image of at least 320 x 320 pixels; Instagram shows it as a circle and downsizes it for the app. Keep the face or logo centred so the circular crop does not cut it, and avoid text near the corners.
What size are Instagram highlight covers?
1080 x 1920, the same as a Story, because a cover is a Story frame. Only the centre circle of the frame shows in the highlights row, so put the icon or subject in the middle and keep the background simple. The Highlight cover preset crops to 9:16 for you.
What is the difference between crop to fill and fit with padding?
Crop to fill scales the photo until it covers the whole target size and trims whatever overflows, so nothing is padded but the edges may be cut; use the Crop focus menu to keep the top, bottom, left, or right instead of the centre. Fit with padding keeps the entire photo visible and fills the remaining space with a colour (or leaves it transparent for PNG and WebP). Stretch forces the exact size and can distort.
Will Instagram compress my image after I upload it?
Yes. Instagram re-compresses every upload, converts it to JPG, and serves it at up to 1080 pixels wide. You get the best result by uploading exactly 1080 wide at a high JPG quality (85 to 95) in the sRGB colour space, which is what the presets and the default quality here produce. Uploading a much larger file does not mean a sharper post.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. All resizing and cropping happens locally in your browser, so your photos never leave your device. There is no signup and no watermark, and re-encoding strips EXIF metadata such as GPS location before you post.
