How it works
The Instagram Character Counter counts your text live, entirely in your browser, and checks it against every Instagram field limit at once. The headline gauge tracks the field you pick in the "Fits in" menu. The table below shows the same text against the caption, bio, name, username, comment, alt text, Note, Threads, and hashtag limits. One paste answers every "will it fit" question.
- Characters are counted as Unicode code points including spaces, punctuation, emoji, and line breaks, the way Instagram counts.
- Username mode also flags characters Instagram does not allow in a handle (anything other than lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores).
- Hashtags and emoji are counted separately, with the 30-hashtag ceiling in the table.
- Feed preview (Caption mode) shows the caption the way it appears in the feed: the part a scroller sees before "more", and how many characters are hidden behind it. The fold is about the first 125 characters, or the first line break if it comes sooner.

Do spaces, emoji, and line breaks count in the Instagram bio?
Yes to all three. The 150-character bio limit includes spaces and line breaks, and an emoji counts as one character here, which matches the Instagram app for most emoji. A few multi-part emoji (skin-tone variants, flags, family emoji) can count as two or more inside Instagram, so leave a little headroom when a bio is full of them.
Why does Instagram reject my username?
Usernames allow only lowercase letters a to z, digits 0 to 9, periods, and underscores, up to 30 characters, with no spaces, no period at the end, and no two periods in a row. Select "Username" in the menu and the tool flags any character Instagram will not accept and the length. Styled Unicode fonts are rejected in usernames too; use them in the name field instead.

Does the count include characters without spaces?
The headline count and every limit include spaces, because that is how Instagram counts. "Characters (no spaces)" is shown separately in the stats row for anyone who needs it, along with words, hashtags, emoji, and line count.
