How it works
Kindle eBooks earn 70% of the list price when it is between $2.99 and $9.99 (and the book meets the 70% option's conditions), minus a delivery cost of $0.15 per megabyte of the compressed file; every other price earns 35% with no delivery cost. Paperbacks and hardcovers earn 60% of the list price (50% at list prices under $9.99) minus the printing cost, which KDP sets from the page count and interior.
US printing costs (Amazon.com, 2026): black-ink paperback $1.00 + $0.012 per page ($2.30 flat for 24 to 108 pages); standard colour $1.00 + $0.0255 per page; premium colour $1.00 + $0.065 per page; hardcover $5.65 + $0.012 per page (black) or + $0.065 (premium colour). Minimum list price = printing cost / royalty rate.
Formulas: eBook royalty = List price x rate - $0.15 x MB (70% option); print royalty = List price x rate - Printing cost. KDP revises the schedule and other marketplaces differ, so every rate and cost is an editable override in Advanced options; the figures above were checked against KDP's help pages in September 2026.
Advanced options let you override the royalty rate, the printing fixed cost, and the per-page cost, for another marketplace or a future rate change.

Frequently asked questions
How much does KDP pay per book?
For a $14.99 black-ink paperback of 300 pages: 60% of $14.99 is $8.99, minus the $4.60 printing cost, leaves $4.39 per copy. For a $4.99 Kindle eBook of 2 MB: 70% is $3.49, minus $0.30 delivery, leaves $3.19. Change the price, page count, or interior above and the royalty updates.
When does a Kindle eBook earn 70% instead of 35%?
When the list price is between $2.99 and $9.99, the book is enrolled in the 70% option, and the price is at least 20% below any print edition and not higher than the book's price elsewhere. Outside that band the rate is 35%. The 70% option also charges the delivery cost ($0.15 per MB on Amazon.com), so a large image-heavy file can earn less at 70% than a lean one; the 35% option has no delivery cost.
What is the minimum list price on KDP?
The printing cost divided by the royalty rate, so the royalty can never go below zero. A 300-page black-ink paperback costs $4.60 to print, so at 60% the minimum is $7.67 (and under $9.99 the 50% rate applies, pushing the practical minimum to $9.20). The calculator shows the minimum for your book and flags a price below it.
Why does a 100-page book cost $2.30 to print?
KDP charges a flat $2.30 for black-ink paperbacks of 24 to 108 pages on Amazon.com; from 110 pages up the price is $1.00 plus $0.012 per page. Colour interiors and hardcovers have no flat band. Short books therefore earn less per dollar of price than the per-page formula suggests, which is why many low-content books are priced at $9.99 or above.
Are these the same figures for Amazon.co.uk or other marketplaces?
No. Each marketplace has its own printing costs, delivery costs, and price bands in its own currency (the UK 70% band, for example, runs from 1.77 to 9.99 pounds). The defaults here are Amazon.com in US dollars. Use the Advanced overrides to enter another marketplace's fixed cost, per-page cost, and rate from KDP's help pages.
Does this include Kindle Unlimited or expanded distribution?
No. Kindle Unlimited pays per page read from a fund that changes monthly, and expanded distribution pays 40% of the list price minus printing, so both are outside this calculator. It covers the standard KDP royalty on a sale through Amazon.
